What does it mean for a material to “breathe”?

When we say a material breathes, we mean it can absorb and release moisture from the air without being damaged. This helps regulate humidity levels indoors and prevents issues like mould, condensation, and musty odours. Natural materials such as timber, clay, lime, and untreated fibres have this ability, while many synthetic products like vinyl and plastic laminates tend to trap moisture.

A breathable material acts as a natural buffer: when humidity rises, it absorbs moisture; when the air becomes dry, it releases it again. This creates a more stable and pleasant indoor environment – without relying solely on mechanical systems.
